Moving to Substack

 I have been curious to see if this blog would take off. It hasn't. That's okay, I guess. Feels a little like talking to myself in the shower.

I've been trying to write something at least every other week, but with no real regularity. Everything I have read about Blogger is that it is a dead community. No one reads blogs. Well, explain Substack? Folks monetizing their blogs... gosh, I guess someone wants to pay for the privilege to read what used to be free. Hmmm. 

 So, in hopes of finding greater community and hopefully more engagement, I am moving this blog over to Substack. https://alexsolla1.substack.com/  

 

I may cross post between these two for a while, but who knows?

Waking the Garden

  hydrangea paniculata (not sure which variety) Walking through the garden this year, there are no bulbs up. Everything is still asleep. Last year was a very early spring after a very warm winter. We had iris reticulata blooming around this week. Not this year.  This year, all the plants have been asleep under thick blankets of snow. But there have also been plants that want to be awake early, like children on Christmas morning who refuse to sleep in. There have been plants who pulled the covers over their heads, refusing to admit that the sun has risen for the first time in four months.   comfrey leaves, melted into a thick mulch over the winter There are some plants that have chronic bed-head... like this gaillardia. It was stunning in the summertime, and all through the autumn it kept blooming until snow put an end to the show. Now its long stems are tangled up like tumbleweed. The Struggle is Real

I began writing this series of ideas down more than once... and stepped away each time I became so enraged by what I was writing. There is no point to me raging about the political state we're in. There are plenty of people who are better equipped to write about the politics and others who are better suited to offer encouragement and direction. I have none of those skills. If anything I have an excess of fear and anxiety.  For nearly fifty years I hid away my emotions as best I could, thinking it would keep me safe. It would be easy to blame my father for instilling that belief... he's dead and can't argue with me. As a child, I was sure he was right, as most children believe their parents to be right. I built a box to put those feelings into and when the box was full, I stacked it on top of the other boxes full of emotions.
